HP 2133 Mini-Note PC KS174UT - VIA C7-M ULV processor 1.2GHz 1GB DDR2 120GB HDD 8.9" WXGA Bluetooth Windows XP Home

Very nice machine5

This computer does just what it is advertised to do. When I opened the box and turned it on there were no surprises. Tiger direct shipped as promised and I actually received the machine earlier than Tiger direct estimated. The screen is small and if you need big print you will have to play with the display settings. Fortunately HP put an icon on the task bar called S3 which allows you to adjust the screen resolution on the fly without having to go to control panel etc. The user manuals are on the hard drive and easy to access and read. The wireless card works on the wireless networks I have tried. The machine recognized the cd/dvd drive I plugged in. All in all it will be a great machine to take on vacation ride on a plane etc. I haven't tried bluetooth yet but I would bet it works well also. The machine seems solid and reliable.More detail ...

Low Battery Life4

This laptop is almost perfect except for two things. The speakers are weak but if you do a couple tweaks then it isn't all that bad. Also the battery life is really low. I would say about 3 hours on full blast. Hopefully they come out with a better battery or mine could just be defective. I might send it back but I'm in no rush since I carry my charger around with me anyway. More detail ...

VERY SATISFIED5

Purchasing a used laptop was a risk and we weren't sure if it was worth taking....until we used this Dell for over a month. We couldn't be happier with our purchase! The only downside to this product is that Microsoft Office did not come installed on this notebook. However the seller was prompt and the computer arrived intact and in just a few days. The battery lasts about two hours and the wireless is invaluable. I don't know how we lived without a laptop for all this time-we hardly ever turn on our PC anymore!More detail ...

Lenovo Thinkpad X200 12.1-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows XP Pro)

Fantastic computer5

First please note that I'm reviewing the actual computer and not any vendor nor the manufacturer's customer service.

Thinkpads generally in my experience have by far the best laptop keyboards I've used. This is my fifth (at least) Thinkpad and my second X series (previous was X60). I have found them all to be remarkably reliable with excellent ergonomics. I especially love small touches like the little mouse in the center of the keyboard (looks like a pencil eraser). Thinkpad seems to have the only truly effective implementation compared to other I've tried such as Toshiba. Also 3 USB ports. Nice. VERY lightweight speedy enough. I LIKE that they did not put a cd/dvd drive in this unit. I'd rather use external given how infrequently I need it. X200 has built-in camera - I still have not figured out how to turn it off - so careful with your attire while surfing Facebook y'all!

So I am thrilled with this unit loved my X60 for the 2+ years that I had it and the T series before that. These things seem designed for "road warriors" like me.

Also be sure to get the small travelers A/C adaptor that Lenovo sells for these. I think I paid $35 for mine. Nice.More detail ...

Dell D420 12.1 1.2 GHz Core Duo 2GB RAM 80GB Windows XP Pro (Factory Re-Certified)

Great Road Warrior5

I have had this D420 for 2 years and it has never failed me no matter what. I take it every day to college. And to get to my school I commute in the crowded NY subway for 1 hour one-way! I also take it when I travel. So far it has been in London (UK) Moscow (Russia) and twice in Kiev (Ukraine).

This computer is very thin and weights only 3 lb. It has the magnesium-alloy frame and high-quality plastic outer shell. It is really rugged and rigid - no flex whatsoever. It has withstood the beating very well - there are practically no marks or scratches after 2 years.

My laptop came with Core Solo U1300 1.06GHz processor 1.5GB of RAM and Windows XP Pro. The system is very stable - never had any problems with it. I installed AVG antivirus Windows Defender and Win Patrol HIPS. With all this running I am able to use MS Word 2007 MS Excel 2007 Firefox (several tabs open) and Media Player at the same time with relative ease. I usually surf Internet watch YouTube or Hulu and do light photo editing with XNView. With an external DVD drive I watch movies and rip CDs. Also I work with Word PowerPoint and Excel every day. I even do some occasional gaming (WarCraft 3 runs smoothly on medium settings!) But do not expect this laptop to be lightning-fast. And do not try to play Crysis! This computer takes its time at the start-up (nothing too big though) and when opening multiple apps.

The computer is very power-efficient. The battery lasts for several hours and easily gets me through my day in college. The wireless card works just fine. I use it to connect to my campus network. At my home I use wired DSL modem via the network card - no problems here either. When I went to Russia and Ukraine I used the built-in dial-up modem - worked like charm. There is a slot for a Cellular HSDPA modem - never used it. I like the SD Card slot - use it a lot. The speaker is really tiny but I use external speakers or headphones for music. The keyboard is really comfortable. I have had something like a dozen laptops and I think that d420 has one of the best keyboards I have seen so far. The touchpad is good too though I usually use a wireless mouse.

To extend connectivity and avoid plugging and unplugging numerous cords every day I bought a Dell Media Base with built-in DVDRW drive. Now my DSL modem speakers printer and power cord are constantly connected to the Base and the d420 sits on top of it. This also allowed me to move all the cords to the back so they do not get in the way.

Long story short: I am really happy with it - highly recommended. You can also find very good reviews of this laptop on notebookreview and notebookcheck.More detail ...

HP 2140 Mini-Note - Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz - RAM 1 GB - HDD 160 GB - GMA 950 - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : Bluetooth 2.0 EDR 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft) - Win XP Home - 10.1" Widescreen TFT 1024 x 576 - camera - Smart Buy - Microsoft Office Ready

Currently my favorite netbook but with some problems for me4

Most current netbooks have a lot of similarities--with the same processor (Atom N270) similar size hard drives (most new with 160 GB) and similar LCD panel resolutions. The HP Mini-Note 2140 is no exception to most of these base tech specs except for the LCD panel resolution of 1024x576 (instead of 1024x600 like most others in the 10" range).

So why is this 2140 my current marginal favorite in comparison after trying out friends' and those available in stores?

- Unlike most manufacturers HP really got the keyboard right. The shift keys and enter key are large and where you expect them to be. Unlike other manufacturers things are in place for productive touch typing and the 92%-size of standard laptop keyboard is pretty easy to adjust to.

- The exterior casing is made of solid-feeling aluminum instead of plastic. The netbook feels more durable and looks beautiful in comparison to most netbooks which can look a bit cheap in my opinion. The aluminum adds a few ounces to the weight but mine is still under 3 pounds with the 6 cell battery.

- The netbook has a good selection of ports and connectors on the outside. It comes with an ExpressCard/54 slot which no other netbook currently does as far as I'm aware. Most of the other connectors are similar to other netbooks. It also has 2 USB ports an analog (vga) monitor out jack (see below for my complaints about it) an SD card slot and separate mic and audio out jacks.

You would think I would be raving about this netbook but I ran into some problems with my computer that make it less usable.

I am unable to get any resolution above 1024x768 on any of the three external monitors I've tried it on. Two of the monitors are 1280x1024 resolution and one is 1440x900. This is even with ONLY the external monitor enabled. At the same time my 4 year old notebook and my desktop detect and make correct resolutions available for the 1280x1024 monitors (my other monitor is a slightly odd resolution). Updating drivers seems to make no difference (the one from HPs site or the Intel drivers). The monitor will not detect correctly and free software (Monitor Asset Manager) that bypasses the windows registry to query the plug'n'play monitor properties directly cannot detect the external monitors correctly on this piece of hardware (works fine on both my other computers).

It seems other people are not having the same kinds of problems that I am encountering so I was either the lucky recipient of a computer with some highly ingrained software or hardware problems or it has difficulty playing nice with some monitors that have pretty standard resolutions.

Unfortunately HP support is somewhere between awful and abysmal and has not chosen to make any reply to my support request email aside from an automatic confirmation they received it (and it has been over two weeks).

A more minor quibble is that the built-in LCD panel resolution is only 1024x576 instead of 1024x600 like most other netbooks. Though it's only a 24-line difference on this small of a screen every pixel counts more than on a larger monitor. At least the resolution is properly advertised so you know what you're getting.

The touchpad also has it's buttons on the side which some people dislike but didn't bother me.

It's overall a good netbook. If HP would fix my external monitor issues I'd probably think it was the best one currently available. As it stands it's a good but mine is flawed and my experience with HP's support has been very poor so far.More detail ...
