Dell Latitude D610 Laptop Notebook 1.73GHz 1GB Windows Xp Pro Wifi

be careful1

I got my laptop and have had problems from day one when you ask for help you get a very rude response with no help I have had to pay someone to repair my laptop. They person who responses to your help email only blames you for the problem. Which I had my computer checked out by a repair guy only to find the mother board is bad in the computer. I would not recommend anybody buy this computer. Oh and if you do don't forget you only have 30 days to make sure it works properly.More detail ...

Dell Latitude D610 Laptop Computer System Centrino/Pentium M Processor Wireless XP Pro

good value4

It has served me well the few weeks I have had it now. The wi-fi is keeping me connected as I'm typing this from a hotel room. The processor is nice and fast. There are four high-speed USB connections. The unit is solidly built (perhaps a mite heavy).

My only criticisms are as follows:

The screen resolution doesn't look quite as sharp as on my desktop monitor. I'd say maybe 85% as sharp so it's usually barely noticeable. The other thing is that the soundcard doesn't have all the mixer capabilities you might expect to find in a desktop. I don't know if this is common in laptops and I sort of stumbled upon the issue. But I got around it by purchasing an external mixer from the Guitar Center.

I initially intended it only as a travel companion but have since begun using it in my recording studio (with Cakewalk Music Creator). Oh and to play SimCity (which doesn't work on Vista!) All in all I am quite satisfied with it.

The seller shipped it out immediately and it arrived by FedEx or UPS (I forget which) in a matter of days (two or three as I recall -- it was quick).More detail ...

My First Netbook.4

The HP Mini 1000 is my very first mini netbook and I am loving it! It does take sometime to get use to the size after working with a 17" monitor laptop but in no time I was using keyboard and learning how to get around. Since it this so small compared to a normal laptop you have to keep in mind that many of options menus and listing can not be seen without you opening and expanding more menus.

The unit is encased in a black and gray scroll metallic design which goes perfectly with the black interior. The keyboard is about 90% the size of a normal keyboard. The only negatives I can say about the design is the touch pad and I can't open the screen flat (180 degrees). The touch pad too wide which feels weird when trying to click the right and left buttons on either side. It does have a scroll feature on the touch pad which is definitely put to good use. It would be nice if you were able to open the screen back to 180 degrees making the netbook totally flat when opened. This is a nice feature on my bigger laptop it always made it easier to use when sitting on the couch or laying in bed.

When I was comparing different netbooks I realized HP offered a faster processor lighter weight (2.5 lbs). Has only USB ports but that is plenty for I need them for. Has an SD/MMC card slot Ethernet port headphone/mic jack and a VGA port to connect the mini to a larger monitor. I get about 3 hours out of the battery life. Netbooks are basically designed for basic tasks such as web surfing word/spreadsheets documents and some basic mutlimedia functions. The HP Mini CPU offers just the right amount of computing power to let you work without any flaws or glitches. The 10.1 monitor screen is bright crisp and the colors are vivid. The The HP Mini 1000's 802.11b/g Wi-Fi card has a fast transfer rate and connectivity seems to have a large range. I do not loose the signal when moving from room to room in my two level home. The signal was constant and strong.

Since Netbooks are so slim and lightweight they are not made to have a CD DVD drive. I purchased the Slim External Laptop Notebook Rewriteable CD and 8X DVD +/- RW Double/Dual Layer Read/write DVD Drive USB 2.0 which is a perfect size. It fits perfectly in my Solo TCA511-4 Tech Collection Netbook Mini Instant Messenger Bag that also holds my Kensington SlimBlade Notebook Wireless Mouse with Nano Receiver as well as my car charger adapter - all purchased separately. I would also recommend the Ohmetric 30123 Screen Protector and Mousepad for Netbooks.

Besides Windows XP Home Basic preinstalled other preloaded software on the Mini 1000 is HP's webcam software Roxio BackOnTrack (alternative for the system restore program) Windows Media Player 7 and Microsoft Works Suite. It has a one-year warranty and 24/7 toll free technical support.More detail ...

Very nice machine5

This computer does just what it is advertised to do. When I opened the box and turned it on there were no surprises. Tiger direct shipped as promised and I actually received the machine earlier than Tiger direct estimated. The screen is small and if you need big print you will have to play with the display settings. Fortunately HP put an icon on the task bar called S3 which allows you to adjust the screen resolution on the fly without having to go to control panel etc. The user manuals are on the hard drive and easy to access and read. The wireless card works on the wireless networks I have tried. The machine recognized the cd/dvd drive I plugged in. All in all it will be a great machine to take on vacation ride on a plane etc. I haven't tried bluetooth yet but I would bet it works well also. The machine seems solid and reliable.More detail ...

Low Battery Life4

This laptop is almost perfect except for two things. The speakers are weak but if you do a couple tweaks then it isn't all that bad. Also the battery life is really low. I would say about 3 hours on full blast. Hopefully they come out with a better battery or mine could just be defective. I might send it back but I'm in no rush since I carry my charger around with me anyway. More detail ...

VERY SATISFIED5

Purchasing a used laptop was a risk and we weren't sure if it was worth taking....until we used this Dell for over a month. We couldn't be happier with our purchase! The only downside to this product is that Microsoft Office did not come installed on this notebook. However the seller was prompt and the computer arrived intact and in just a few days. The battery lasts about two hours and the wireless is invaluable. I don't know how we lived without a laptop for all this time-we hardly ever turn on our PC anymore!More detail ...

Lenovo Thinkpad X200 12.1-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows XP Pro)

Fantastic computer5

First please note that I'm reviewing the actual computer and not any vendor nor the manufacturer's customer service.

Thinkpads generally in my experience have by far the best laptop keyboards I've used. This is my fifth (at least) Thinkpad and my second X series (previous was X60). I have found them all to be remarkably reliable with excellent ergonomics. I especially love small touches like the little mouse in the center of the keyboard (looks like a pencil eraser). Thinkpad seems to have the only truly effective implementation compared to other I've tried such as Toshiba. Also 3 USB ports. Nice. VERY lightweight speedy enough. I LIKE that they did not put a cd/dvd drive in this unit. I'd rather use external given how infrequently I need it. X200 has built-in camera - I still have not figured out how to turn it off - so careful with your attire while surfing Facebook y'all!

So I am thrilled with this unit loved my X60 for the 2+ years that I had it and the T series before that. These things seem designed for "road warriors" like me.

Also be sure to get the small travelers A/C adaptor that Lenovo sells for these. I think I paid $35 for mine. Nice.More detail ...

Dell D420 12.1 1.2 GHz Core Duo 2GB RAM 80GB Windows XP Pro (Factory Re-Certified)

Great Road Warrior5

I have had this D420 for 2 years and it has never failed me no matter what. I take it every day to college. And to get to my school I commute in the crowded NY subway for 1 hour one-way! I also take it when I travel. So far it has been in London (UK) Moscow (Russia) and twice in Kiev (Ukraine).

This computer is very thin and weights only 3 lb. It has the magnesium-alloy frame and high-quality plastic outer shell. It is really rugged and rigid - no flex whatsoever. It has withstood the beating very well - there are practically no marks or scratches after 2 years.

My laptop came with Core Solo U1300 1.06GHz processor 1.5GB of RAM and Windows XP Pro. The system is very stable - never had any problems with it. I installed AVG antivirus Windows Defender and Win Patrol HIPS. With all this running I am able to use MS Word 2007 MS Excel 2007 Firefox (several tabs open) and Media Player at the same time with relative ease. I usually surf Internet watch YouTube or Hulu and do light photo editing with XNView. With an external DVD drive I watch movies and rip CDs. Also I work with Word PowerPoint and Excel every day. I even do some occasional gaming (WarCraft 3 runs smoothly on medium settings!) But do not expect this laptop to be lightning-fast. And do not try to play Crysis! This computer takes its time at the start-up (nothing too big though) and when opening multiple apps.

The computer is very power-efficient. The battery lasts for several hours and easily gets me through my day in college. The wireless card works just fine. I use it to connect to my campus network. At my home I use wired DSL modem via the network card - no problems here either. When I went to Russia and Ukraine I used the built-in dial-up modem - worked like charm. There is a slot for a Cellular HSDPA modem - never used it. I like the SD Card slot - use it a lot. The speaker is really tiny but I use external speakers or headphones for music. The keyboard is really comfortable. I have had something like a dozen laptops and I think that d420 has one of the best keyboards I have seen so far. The touchpad is good too though I usually use a wireless mouse.

To extend connectivity and avoid plugging and unplugging numerous cords every day I bought a Dell Media Base with built-in DVDRW drive. Now my DSL modem speakers printer and power cord are constantly connected to the Base and the d420 sits on top of it. This also allowed me to move all the cords to the back so they do not get in the way.

Long story short: I am really happy with it - highly recommended. You can also find very good reviews of this laptop on notebookreview and notebookcheck.More detail ...

HP 2140 Mini-Note - Atom N270 / 1.6 GHz - RAM 1 GB - HDD 160 GB - GMA 950 - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : Bluetooth 2.0 EDR 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft) - Win XP Home - 10.1" Widescreen TFT 1024 x 576 - camera - Smart Buy - Microsoft Office Ready

Currently my favorite netbook but with some problems for me4

Most current netbooks have a lot of similarities--with the same processor (Atom N270) similar size hard drives (most new with 160 GB) and similar LCD panel resolutions. The HP Mini-Note 2140 is no exception to most of these base tech specs except for the LCD panel resolution of 1024x576 (instead of 1024x600 like most others in the 10" range).

So why is this 2140 my current marginal favorite in comparison after trying out friends' and those available in stores?

- Unlike most manufacturers HP really got the keyboard right. The shift keys and enter key are large and where you expect them to be. Unlike other manufacturers things are in place for productive touch typing and the 92%-size of standard laptop keyboard is pretty easy to adjust to.

- The exterior casing is made of solid-feeling aluminum instead of plastic. The netbook feels more durable and looks beautiful in comparison to most netbooks which can look a bit cheap in my opinion. The aluminum adds a few ounces to the weight but mine is still under 3 pounds with the 6 cell battery.

- The netbook has a good selection of ports and connectors on the outside. It comes with an ExpressCard/54 slot which no other netbook currently does as far as I'm aware. Most of the other connectors are similar to other netbooks. It also has 2 USB ports an analog (vga) monitor out jack (see below for my complaints about it) an SD card slot and separate mic and audio out jacks.

You would think I would be raving about this netbook but I ran into some problems with my computer that make it less usable.

I am unable to get any resolution above 1024x768 on any of the three external monitors I've tried it on. Two of the monitors are 1280x1024 resolution and one is 1440x900. This is even with ONLY the external monitor enabled. At the same time my 4 year old notebook and my desktop detect and make correct resolutions available for the 1280x1024 monitors (my other monitor is a slightly odd resolution). Updating drivers seems to make no difference (the one from HPs site or the Intel drivers). The monitor will not detect correctly and free software (Monitor Asset Manager) that bypasses the windows registry to query the plug'n'play monitor properties directly cannot detect the external monitors correctly on this piece of hardware (works fine on both my other computers).

It seems other people are not having the same kinds of problems that I am encountering so I was either the lucky recipient of a computer with some highly ingrained software or hardware problems or it has difficulty playing nice with some monitors that have pretty standard resolutions.

Unfortunately HP support is somewhere between awful and abysmal and has not chosen to make any reply to my support request email aside from an automatic confirmation they received it (and it has been over two weeks).

A more minor quibble is that the built-in LCD panel resolution is only 1024x576 instead of 1024x600 like most other netbooks. Though it's only a 24-line difference on this small of a screen every pixel counts more than on a larger monitor. At least the resolution is properly advertised so you know what you're getting.

The touchpad also has it's buttons on the side which some people dislike but didn't bother me.

It's overall a good netbook. If HP would fix my external monitor issues I'd probably think it was the best one currently available. As it stands it's a good but mine is flawed and my experience with HP's support has been very poor so far.More detail ...
